Celebrating Love

It was 14th Feb morning and not to my surprise my message box got filled with message - Happy Valentines Day. The whole day along there were n number of mails and messages…
One keeps listening to things like what u bought for her, where are you taking her in the evening. Did you send her flowers? And what not……………

Love has so many form- the physical, platonic, emotional, romantic, filial, reverent – but its only in recent times that we in India have brought it out in the open and commercialised love as on Valentines day.

We have had so many well known couples who have defied society, overcome odds and lived and died for love. Radha cared for no one and was madly, badly and totally involved in her love for Kanha. Shakuntala forgot everything in her obsession with Dushyanta, Sanyukta garlanded the statute of Prithviraj and he magically appeared and carried her off, Heer and Ranjha defied society and so did Shireen and Farhad. These are just a handful of well-known names. There have been and are millions of couples, some of whom hardly ever get publicity outside their own houses.

Rakhsa Bandhan, bhau-beej and other festivals have observed another aspect of love- the brother-sister one. Guru-shishyas, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, friends also have love and affection for each other and deep feelings. The emotion of love is age old and has been expressed in various ways. But is only now that the western concept of love has brought emotions into the open.

Ask someone who is in love, whether he needs 14th Feb to express his love, or does he wait for 14th Feb to express his love. For the ones who are in love every day is Valentines Day. You don’t really need just one day in a year to express your love for someone.

Celebrating love the valentine’s way has become very common and well known in India in the past few years. Though basically this day encompasses all the aspects of love, it is taken for granted that it means the romantic love. However, love is a very personal and important emotion, which needs no commercialised declaration. Can cards ever express the first flush of love? Can mechanical words give subtle infections of words, of whispers, of secret looks, of clandestine meetings?

Sales of the greeting cards and gift outlets for the month of February are more than the sales for the rest of the year. This shows how much people are crazy about celebrating love on Valentines Day. I wonder how long those greeting cards are kept with them, which they think, carry their love and emotion!

Love need not be expressed by buying a colourful card, or sending a two liner and getting it published in a newspaper column. Love can be expressed in an infinite number of ways and every couple have their own methods, their own ways of exchanging feelings often without words and which they may want to keep secret for ever.

A tender look, a softening of eyes, a delicate brush of a garment expresses much more than pre written words on a card.

Respecting and honouring the loved one, obeying, having faith and confidence are the other ways of expressing the feeling of love. This is an emotion that cannot be tailor-made. One can make oneself like a person but loving is totally different.

Often love has no reason. Love can develop between the two most unsuitable persons or the two most unlikely and one cannot just pinpoint the exact reason for anyone falling in love. Commercial concerns have cashed in on the emotions of love and have made a ready and easy outlet for those who want to express their feelings. As an exciting novelty, as an interesting pastime, this form of expression may be all right. But when it comes down to the real deep feeling of love, no cold-blooded words will ever replace the real thing.

“Phool Khilte hn, baharo ka sama hota hn
aise hi mausam mey to pyaar jawan hota hn
aisi bataon ko hoton se nahin kehte,
ye fasana to aankhon se bayan hota hn”
