We believe what we are told

Disclaimer: No offence against any religion or whatsoever... Purely my personal opinion...

I was never fond of reading… specially novels and all… few days’ back I called up my friend to meet in colony after office and since she needed some reason to come out of her home (coz it was 8.30 and her dad sometimes behave like Hitler), she took this book along to give it to me…

I was like… u know I dun read much then why this book… but she insisted on reading this… and was sure that I would love it…

The book in discussion was “Da Vinci Code”

In the following weekend I made an outstation trip and got the opportunity to read the book… and here is an interesting conversation between my friend and me…

Me: Hey luv u for da Vinci Code… read some odd 100 pages… It’s simply awesome
My friend: I know… U & I share the same tastes in life… :-)
Me: Ye thats true… except for a sip of Vodka n a flesh of meat ;-)
My friend: I am quite sure you would have liked it… If you were born some other place… some other time… some variables here n there…
Me: That “if” changes the entire perception… lets live without it
My Friend: Aint it always like that
Me: Indeed is ;-) but love for perception thru “if” is never less either ;-)
My Friend: ;) Ah wisdom… we are so full of it… he he he… abhi bas kar

(Thats just one of our bizzare style of interaction ;-))
I shared this conversation just for fun…

Within a working week I could complete the entire book… that too during a hectic week… after having my dinner I used to read book till 2-3 in the night… it was so addictive… the twists… the turns… were simply awesome…

Coming to the story… it will shatter your trust on Christianity and God… some times its difficult to doubt the facts that are narrated in the book… or rather the way in which they are narrated…
But if you are a true holy Christian then please don’t read this book… it might hurt your sentiments…

But from a purely novel point of veiw, I believe this could be one of the best written book... ya its one of the most controversial also... If you have read this book then please let me know what you think about it :-)

I'm not so 'crazy' about History as such… but I love if someone attempts to prove that the old age customs we are following were mere convenience of the people who were in the power during that era… and they have just given some mythological link or have attached such other similar stories(beliefs) behind it… to attract the public acceptance…
And I feel it’s the same for any religion… in any part of the globe…

I can’t follow anything blindly just because a group of people called community is following it… there should me a meaning attached to that custom… and that meaning should appear logical to me…

Sometimes my sis and I get nice lecture from mom that we don’t respect culture and all that blah blah…
For me Ramayan and Mahabharat are mere mythological stories…

Infact the whole perception with which I see Mahabharat is different… the whole kingdom for which the fight happened was always “Duryodhan’s” but he was always shown as a bad guy… I mean if someone will gamble his wife and loose that gamble and then blame the other for misbehaving… who is the real culprit
This is one such incident I can give u plenty of such reasonings where the so-called “good” side were not so good… Neways thats my perception ;-)

I don’t even endorse the custom of Karwa Chowth… I fail to understand how a husband’s life will be long coz of wife keeping a fast on a particular day… and leave alone that… how the hell moon comes into picture…

Ne ways… people who believe do… (Including my aunts… grandmas… some of my friends… n my sweet GF)

History… is always debated… coz the same story is different when told in different region/state/country... it’s based on what we have heard since we were kids… or what people have endorsed thru books and what we have heard need not be true always… ;-)

PS: This post was drafted in December last year... finally its on air ;-)

Da Vinci Code really keeps the reader hooked.. but after watching a documentary n a conversation with Dan Brown I as of now m not believing the end in the book..

There is a line in the book on history... dont remember it now.. something like History is wht we tell future gen n not wht really happened

m waiting for the movie on this featuring Tom Hanks...

A bit sensationalist though Dan Brown is very captivating.

i luvd the book...it was unputdownable!!! and i read it like about more than a year back (rajiv's x-mas gift for me)...and have since re-read it several times since...

and as far as shaking anyone's faith is concerned...i discussed and read exerpts from the book with my ma-in-law who is a very devout christian herself...! A lot of stuff...she just cldn't get herself to believe but she did admit that the whole theory was fascinating stuff...

what i enjoyed abt the book besides the whole religious controversy...are the facts about the paintings...the divine proportion theory...

..i heard about that book too from my friend but as you said better not to read it if someone is truly a christian.

i'm not against any religion too..i respect all and what matters is the "true friendship" behind the different religions.
anyway,thanx for sharing yaar^_^

Pu bear, my ears r so full of DaVinci Code these days :) Most of my friends have read it and r asking me to read it...I never get time to read much these days but I will soon...since u too recommend it...:)

**it will shatter your trust on Christianity and God…

I dun think it will...I believe in Jesus just as much as I believe in any other God. So what if he was married? Like I said in Anup's recent post, it still remains a belief...I mean the belief that he was single was also just a belief. And if ppl r saying that He was infact married, then it still will be a belief...cos these r all what ppl r saying :)

Anyways...if ppl r fearing to read it just cos they believe it will shatter their faith, then was their faith in the first place?

Keshi.

"da Vinci Code" it is a good read. Waiting for the Movie desperately.

Religion is something like do & don't rules of company handbook.

These guidelines are just to maintain the descipline.

Ramayan & Mahabharat are Mythological stories.

Dont have to wonder if our grandchildren starts believing "Devdas" is a real story.

Karva chowth even I dont believe. If it was true then why there are so many widow's.

It is superstitiuos belief.

One of the best post from you :)

well i would say if anybody is a christian read this book and see whether it affects u or not ........

well i read da the book in a matter of 12 hours or so continuous one stretch reading as the 1 book in circulation in the hostel had time table as to to whom when........
well i like the story ...
the suspense was good ....but towards the end it just falls. my expectations from the book failed ...
as to being a christian and reading da vinci code...well it is fiction, i left it at that....a good read ....it lead me into reading more books on historic adventures ....

hmmmm when I wrote abt it u told me that u r reading it . so I was wondering ki Puneet ne us novel ka kya kiya.
If one goes by Romila Thapar's history of india then Ramayana would be purely mythological cration as there was no hint of life south of vindhyas in that age.

But She has different opinion abt Mahabharata! Excavations done at the site of kuruchetra shows remains of a kingdom at the time of King Pareekshit.

Anyway I totally agree with ur view that age old customs shd be followed with some logic.

Hi Puneet, I've read the Da Vinci code sometime back and I find it fascinating too but not as much as it is hyped. Don't you think there is too much happening in such a short span of time? Let's see how the movie is.

My take on religion is somewhat similar to yours, I simply cannot identify or believe as easily as others around me seem to where matters related to religion and culture are concerned. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming I admit, but mostly it beats me how people can go to heights in the name of religion, festivals and celebration. Particularly when everything is so commercialised nowadays. Well, to each their own. I like to keep it simple, what with all the other complications going on in life, who needs to add to the chaos :)

Yay! Another convert to "The DaVinci Code"!! :D

Though it is one of my fav books, I don't think it is one of the best books written. Take away all the fascianting details and all you got is a regular chase pot boiler.

And I don't think devout Christians should not read this book. It will give them something to think about, just as it has given the rest of us something to think about. They may choose to believe it or debunk it as a piece of total rubbish!

And if you liked "The DaVinci Code", I think you'll enjoy "Secrets of the Code - An Unauthorised Guide to 'The DaVinci Code'" by Dan Burnstein. The beginning is kinda repetitive but it gets interesting later on. Concepts like that of the Sacred Femine, the Dead Sea Scrolls and others have been further elaborated upon. There's also one chapter devoted to listing out each n every mistake in "The DaVinci Code", chapter by chapter!! :))
